Dogs are certainly man’s best friend and recently dog lovers out there have just learned about the benefits of CBD for dogs. However, not all of the pet lovers have enough knowledge of what CBD can really do for dogs.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. The hemp plant is a variety of cannabis. However, it has very low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which makes users feel high.
CBD products usually contain 0.3% of THC or less. CBD has therapeutic benefits with no psychoactive effect. So you don’t need to worry about your dogs being stoned. Today, CBD can be found in pet supplements and other pet products.
It may be hard to believe but dogs have the same endocannabinoid system (ECS) as humans. This system works with two receptors in the body:
• CB1 receptors can be found in the brain, nervous system, glands, and organs.
• CB2 receptors are located in the regulatory cells of the immune system.
Once CBD enters the body, it targets these ECS receptors to restore balance. This is how it produces health effects.
If you plan to use CBD for your dog, visit a vet for advice and guidance.
1. Pain and Inflammation
The number one benefit of CBD for dogs is to providing relief from pain and inflammation. Pain is associated with many health conditions. Inflammation may be normal but the pain accompanied by it is uncomfortable for dogs.
A recent study found out that the CBD can suppress and inhibit the pain signals in a dog’s brain. Both acute and chronic pain can be relieved with CBD. Some common health problems that cause pain include the following:
• Sprains and strains
• Recovery from surgery
• Hip dysplasia
• Torn ligaments
Commonly, NSAIDs are prescribed for dogs with these conditions. However, these drugs have adverse effects. On the bright side, CBD has only minor side effects and they are rare. According to the studies, CBD is safe for dogs.
Not only humans can be affected by cancer but also dogs and the treatments for dogs is quite limited and may cause painful side effects. Other than the pain and inflammation, CBD can also reduce nausea and vomiting in dogs undergoing cancer treatment.
CBD is an antiemetic drug which means it blocks the feeling of nausea. This is similar to medicine for motion sickness that can be found at the drug store. The CBD is not a cure for cancer but it can help slow the growth of tumors.
3. Anxiety and Stress
One challenge that dog owners face is getting rid of the separation anxiety in dogs. It is inevitable that people have to leave their dogs in the house for the day to go to work.
Anxiety in dogs also manifests in areas with loud noises like fireworks, faulty smoke alarm and crowded area or riding a car. These stressful lead to symptoms like:
• Digestive issues (diarrhea or constipation)
• Behavioral changes – keeping to himself, more aggressive towards people or other dogs
• Not eating or reduced appetite
• Excessive panting, shaking or licking
CBD can help dogs adapt to these situations due to its anti-anxiety effects.
